NEW YORK -- Millions of Americans are about to get free annual copies of their credit reports. Starting Dec. 1, residents of Western states along with Alaska and Hawaii will be able to get free copies of the reports every year from the three major credit agencies -- Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. Federal law will allow people in SC to check credit for free starting in June. South Carolinians will be able to check their credit rating for free in a few months. Legislation passed by Congress last year allows people one free credit check a year. Next week, millions of people living in the Western states will have the right to a truly free credit report from three of the biggest credit bureaus at least once per year.
